An eclipse-timed SETI search turns 1.95 million signals into zero detections

Breakthrough Listen researchers searched archival Murriyang/Parkes observations of 27 TESS exoplanet systems whose planets entered or exited secondary eclipse during the observing window. A transmitter associated with a planet could disappear when the planet passed behind its star and return afterward, giving the team a time-dependent signature to test in addition to narrow bandwidth and Doppler drift.

The pipeline searched 704 to 4,032 megahertz and produced 1,954,880 signals. Automated radio-frequency-interference filters reduced those to 14,639 events for visual inspection, and every survivor was attributed to terrestrial interference. The peer-reviewed study reports no technosignature. It also quantifies sensitivity: for roughly 59 percent of the targets, an Arecibo-class 20-terawatt transmitter would have been detectable under the study's assumptions.

Why it matters

A timed eclipse supplies a falsifiable behavior that a planet-associated signal should follow. The null result constrains one class of transmitter without pretending to search every frequency, emission pattern, or civilization.
