Australia preserves a 1960 weapons-range case—and its competing conclusions

The National Archives of Australia presents a confidential report written after July 15, 1960 sightings near Wewak, about 24 kilometers from Maralinga Village inside the Woomera Prohibited Area. The document came from a Department of Supply file on the Weapons Research Establishment and was later transferred with material used by the Royal Commission into British Nuclear Tests in Australia.

The security officer wrote that several dozen witnesses were interviewed across police, weapons-research, military, patrol, and civilian roles. One technical investigator believed calculations argued against a natural phenomenon, while the report's final assessment favored either a meteor or static electricity and acknowledged that the light could not be identified. The disagreement survives in the same primary record rather than being tidied into one retrospective answer.
