Meteorites yield tens of thousands of organic molecular formulas

Researchers combined ultrahigh-resolution 21-tesla Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry with high-resolution noncontact atomic-force microscopy to study soluble organic matter from the Murchison and Aguas Zarcas carbonaceous meteorites. The mass spectra resolved tens of thousands of molecular formulas, while the microscope supplied direct structural images of selected individual molecules rather than inferring every structure from mass alone.

The two meteorites showed overlapping but distinct chemical populations, recording different parent-body histories and alteration pathways. The work expands the molecular-level picture of extraterrestrial organic chemistry; it does not identify organisms, biological metabolism, or a biosignature. Complex carbon chemistry can be assembled and modified without life, which is precisely why structural context matters when future samples are evaluated.

Why it matters

Meteorites deliver prebiotic ingredients and chemical history to Earth. Connecting formula inventories to actual molecular structures helps distinguish plausible abiotic pathways from patterns that might one day justify a biological interpretation.
