A new diagnostic study examined nine M-dwarf stars previously flagged because WISE data showed more mid-infrared emission than expected—a possible waste-heat signature in hypothetical partial Dyson-sphere searches. By propagating Gaia positions to the WISE observation dates, measuring infrared centroids, checking radio counterparts, and inspecting deeper optical and near-infrared surveys, the authors found strong background-contamination evidence for candidates B and C and suggestive evidence for candidate A.
Several other fields contain offsets or visible interlopers consistent with hot, dust-obscured galaxies blended into WISE's comparatively broad pixels.
